  • Fri, 04:49: I'm not getting that nearly so much with Gibson's Hamlet. But in terms of clarity, he does say the lines quietly and slowly. So there's that
  • Fri, 04:55: Also, something super unfortunate? The exterior shots all look like Monty Python.
  • Fri, 05:09: The nunnery lines. Interesting. I...can't believe how many ways those damn lines have been interpreted as.
  • Fri, 05:17: The post-Polonius Gertrude bed scene is an awful fucking lot like oh yeah there it happened
  • Fri, 05:31: Helena Bonham Carter was robbed of a scene pre-madness with the news of Polonius' death. Or a scene with the body. Robbed.
  • Fri, 05:38: So Laertes *isn't* Keanu Reeves, but he is a very reasonable approximation. Particularly from the Bill and Ted days.
  • Fri, 06:01: Honestly, what was the reasoning in Claudius willing to poison his stepson during a public match anyway, what the fuck Claudius.
  • Fri, 06:02: Gertrude, ahhhhhh, Glenn Close hahhhhh, Glennntruuuuuude
  • Fri, 06:09: Interesting things they've done with the final fight scene. Gertrude's death, Claudius' mental workings, and Laertes' flipflop.
  • Fri, 06:10: Little bummed they didn't give more to Laertes. Especially since he's all this Hamlet has for friends. R&G were shitheads.
  • Fri, 06:11: And no Fortinbras/Norway whatsoever. Yuuup.
  • Fri, 06:14: And now! For the Ethan Hawke Hamlet, or whatever it is I can cram into 50m. And hello, it starts with title cards and techno.
  • Fri, 06:16: Very first line, I am jarred that we're given reasons why he should be upset..and then..the "wherefore not why I have lost my mirth" speech.
  • Fri, 06:17: I didn't realize Ethan Hawke was friggin channeling Bono ohhhh myyyyy godddddddddd https://t.co/MZJyMdAFwn
  • Fri, 06:18: Bill Murray is Polonius and I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS.
  • Fri, 06:22: This is awesome; the monologues are basically Doogie Howser journal entries. Complete with Hamlet staring at the computer screen.
  • Fri, 06:23: It's essentially "I cry into this Sony minidisc vlog journal, but break my heart, for I must hold my tongue."
  • Fri, 06:28: So I've been on a spate of adaptations where they've cut out the actual opening ghost scene. Or moved it, in any event.
  • Fri, 06:30: Horatio's accent is throwing me off. In fact, everyone's accent is throwing me off. Everyone else being America. Horatio..? Irish.
  • Fri, 06:31: Wait, THIS Ophelia also has a photography side thing too??? Huh. Interesting.
  • Fri, 06:33: Wow, Liev Schrieber!Laertes is so. Into. His. Sister. Wowww.
  • Fri, 06:40: AMAZING. ACTUAL MODEM SOUNDS. Oh jesus, what an awkward post-internet time to make this particular adaptation.
  • Fri, 06:43: Oh my god, Bill Murray!Polonius just tied the shoelaces of Julia Stiles!Ophelia. Daaaaaaad.
  • Fri, 06:44: Oh god Ophelia looks like she's in a snuff filmmmm
  • Fri, 06:46: Oh my god, Polonius comes home with birthday balloons and interrupts them making out in the world's worst open air dark room.
  • Fri, 06:49: Huh. HUH. They skipped over Hamlet's entire antic disposition speech. The "swear it" speech. So he just goes straight to crazy.
  • Fri, 06:49: And...tries to kill Kyle MacLachlan. Obvs.
  • Fri, 06:50: IS OPHELIA WEARING JNCOS https://t.co/6bFCHYcYSE
  • Fri, 06:52: Ahhhh I see. I see. The pool. Ophelia's gonna drown. I see.
  • Fri, 06:54: Wow, so. Ophelia has thoughts of jumping into the pool as early as this, huh.
  • Fri, 06:57: STEVE ZAHN AS GUILDENSTERN YEAH
  • Fri, 06:58: He *SCREAMS* "to VISIT YOU, MY LORD. No other occasion" to Hamlet in a nightclub. Amazing. Amazing.
  • Fri, 07:03: @Penns_woods https://t.co/KtcsHV2S8C
  • Fri, 07:08: Wow, so Ophelia betrays Hamlet, has another little breakdown, and then gets braids. Microbraids?
  • Fri, 07:11: There are no players, this is entrapping the king by way of modern art and powerpoint presentation. Basically Koyaanisqatsi.
  • Fri, 07:16: So Claudius (Kyle MacLachlan) isn't praying in a church; he's monologuing in a limo. And even though Hamlet could CRASH THEM, he has a gun.
  • Fri, 07:19: What the shit, Bill Murray got shot in the motherfucking eye and lived for another few seconds. Long enough to open the door. Wow.

  • Fri, 07:27: Another awkward 2000 anachronism. The pay phone.
  • Fri, 07:31: Alas, alack. I am 40 minutes to finish but I'm gonna get out of here because people are filing into work.
  • Fri, 08:11: Ultimately I summed up Gibson as underwhelming but not a total embarrassment and Hawke as a dystopian Baz Luhrmann fever dream. @fffinnagain
  • Fri, 08:34: Look upon your Rosencrantz and your Guildenstern and their Rangers-loving, Wired magazine reading tweaker ways https://t.co/zkxuiRQLOr
  • Fri, 08:37: Fortinbras comes up on home shopping network on the plane to England and then THIS guy introduced him πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ‘ŒπŸΌ https://t.co/Q9iIJkfG1X

  • Fri, 08:47: Polonius' speech to Laertes was interrupted by Fortinbras...faxing.
  • Fri, 08:53: They cut Gertrude's description of the willow and flowers in Ophelia's death scene. They cut the gravedigger? He's singing Jimi Hendrix.
  • Fri, 08:55: I am desperate to know how Ethan Hawke managed to kill Rosencrantz and Guildenstern on a transatlantic flight.
  • Fri, 08:57: Claudius made a text file. That's the commission to them. Hamlet finds it on a laptop and saves. It. To. A. Floppy. Disk. πŸ’ΎπŸ’ΎπŸ’ΎπŸ’ΎπŸ’ΎπŸ’Ύ
  • Fri, 09:00: The king's wager comes through by fax. To Laertes' kitchen table. Which is where fax machines lived in the 90s, obvs.
